Thank you, Amber, for being the publishing savior that every aspiring author dreams of finding.

ONE FAILURE AT A TIME, publishing assistance (pub. 2024)

Professional expertise with a personal connection. The process with Rooted in Writing is well put together, and the extra attention to detail gives a step-by-step experience that is easy to work through. Rooted in Writing came highly recommended by an author friend, and I could tell right from the start, I was in the right place to bring my book through the final stages of publishing. There are many reasons I continue to work with Rooted in Writing, but working with someone who really cares about your project is something that stands out in a profound way. Thanks so much.

RAMPANT DAWN SERIES, book layout (pub. 2023)

Rooted in Writing was recommended to me by an editor that did my first run-through of editing my book. My first editor had a baby and was slowing down her work, so she recommended Amber and her team. I am so glad she did!

I was surprised by how thorough their process was and all the information they provide during their editing services, like the book map and so many notes—both about things they loved and things I could improve. Their revisions were never critical but always positive and encouraging. It was also very cool to hear other people talk about my characters and understand their personalities!

Before this experience, I was kind of embarrassed to let people read my book, but after going through the complete editing process with Rooted in Writing, I now have a first novel I can be proud of! I can now say I did it and I have the confidence to keep going with Book 2!

I would definitely recommend Amber and her team to anyone!

THE SWORD OF PHOXNAY, developmental edit and the Florist package (pub. 2023)

Amber is both very knowledgeable and very sociable and approachable. She understands the business and is incredibly helpful. I’m always greatly impressed by both her typesetting and design service and her speedy delivery.

TRAGEDY OF CEDAIN SERIES, book layout (pub. 2023)

Amber Helt is nuts.

I paid for a developmental edit which, would revise several weakened plotlines in my 110,000-word novel and tighten my characters’ development. But what I got was nearly a hundred pages of feedback, suggestions, a book map, breakdowns, explanations, concerns, and steps to take when my novel is completed.

In short, what I got was well beyond what I could ever thank her for in a measly testimonial.

I searched through dozens of editors to take on this extensive project. I came across many proficient and thorough individuals and had even hired one prior to Rooted in Writing who, in comparison, looks like they did the job of an intern next to Amber’s work.

Boldly, I would say it’s a crime to call what she did a developmental edit. She reclaimed the meaning and set the bar high for other editors. Rooted in Writing truly is the diamond package. Amber created a custom book map, which I’ve never seen another editor do before. Each chapter was color-coded per POV and broke down everything from plot synopsis to how much time passed in that chapter. She went in depth with internal and external motives—which was extremely beneficial to help me track how the characters’ motives gradually evolved throughout the manuscript. This master of organization is exactly why I call her level of editing the top of the line.

I wouldn’t hire anyone else for future books.

If you’re looking for someone to make quick, snappy changes to your novel and be done with it, then Amber isn’t the right choice for you. She’s more than just an editor; she is a dedicated devotee who truly cares about your novel’s success. Her commitment to my project brought my story from a scattered mess to something I’m proud to submit for publication. She never faltered or conceded to the stress of the multiple plot lines, teases and puzzles hidden throughout, or the buildup for the sequels. She tackled every obstacle with a heart full of passion and a head full of endless solutions.

Amber has a niche for knowing what your story needs and what you need to work on as a writer. The only profession that would suit her better than perfecting your novel would be quitting entirely so she could work with me full-time because I absolutely adore her.

I can’t recommend her highly enough. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that for what you pay, she’s worth every penny and more. Amber Helt is nuts—and I wouldn’t change that for the world.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END, developmental edit, line edit

Amber and the Rooted in Writing team have made a world of difference in the quality of my books. From the clever website theme that first caught my eye to the initial email exchanges, I knew I was heading in the right direction for an editor. I love that they get in touch directly to ask questions before the editing process even begins. Time travel is not easy to keep straight, and their questions made it clear they’re really thinking about what’s going on in the background, not just trying to churn my book through an assembly line. The interactions feel personal, like my books mean something to them aside from just a paycheck.

I appreciate that I’m not steamrolled on decisions. Changes are suggested, not required, and if I disagree, there is no offense taken. They take the time to make choices and suggestions that stick to my style and make sure I am keeping up with current writing trends. The attention to detail is amazing—they pick up on problems my first editors, critique partners, and beta readers missed.

Overall I have been incredibly happy with Rooted in Writing’s handling of my first three books, and there is no one else I will trust with my final book when it is ready for editing.

THE SPHERE SAGA, copy edit (pub. 2023)

When I began chronicling my story hero’s tale in The Secret Guardians books, I searched for storytelling direction in the collective wisdom of other writers who had traveled the fabled hero’s journey road before me. However, book learning was not enough. My lessons had to be taken directly from one remarkable editor, Amber Helt of Rooted in Writing. Without Amber’s skilled guidance and flawless editing, The Secret Guardians books would be a pale reflection of what they are today.

Amber is a master of her craft. Thorough and relentless, she works side by side with her author clients to produce the absolute best writing products possible. Plus, she talks a mile a minute. So if you have the great fortune to work with her, get ready to download editorial wisdom as if you are drinking from a fire hose. She’s that good.

THE SECRET GUARDIANS SERIES, the Greenhouse package (pub. 2022)

When I began searching for editors, I was inundated with over 40 queries. I quickly weeded out any prospects that did not present themselves professionally and moved on to sample edits. This was where Rooted in Writing really shined. The writing itself is very important to me, and I wanted an editor that could bring my prose to the next level. I was blown away by the sample edit, and I knew immediately that this was who I wanted to work with. I was not disappointed.

Amber and her team are professionals, and they know what they’re doing. No matter where you are in your author journey, Rooted in Writing can help you cut away the fat and tighten your manuscript while keeping your author and character voices alive and humming. I very strongly recommend their services to anyone who wants a high-quality edit, and I promise that you will learn something along the way no matter where you are in your author journey.

HEART OF THE VALLEY, line and copy edit (pub. 2022)

My manuscript assessment was simply incredible. I am so grateful for how much detail and effort Amber put into it. She has given me the courage to dive back into my story’s world and preserve the good parts of it while also significantly overhauling and ironing out the goals, motivations, and conflicts of my main characters. I think deep down I knew stuff about them was lacking, but I couldn’t grasp how and why because I was too buried in it all and too close to the story. This evaluation was exactly what I needed!

WHEN THE BYGONES RISE, manuscript assessment

I know I never could have gotten this far without Amber. When I first came to Rooted in Writing, I had no idea how the process would go, only the knowledge that an editor was needed for a good book to be written.

Amber was very patient with me through the process, and I honestly don’t think I could have made it through my first book without her. She gave amazing insight and helped me trim the fat off my book. She taught me so much about writing that will help me in future books. Thank you, Amber, for everything you’ve done for me. Thank you for making my dream a reality!

LINKED, the Greenhouse package (pub. 2020)

Rooted in Writing is absolutely amazing. There are several editors that offer services for self-published authors, but Rooted in Writing offers much more. This was an amazing experience tailored to what I needed. There are a variety of packages that an author can choose from. What I liked most was the chance to speak with Amber. She guided me through the process and I was able to ask questions and review documents easily through the author portal. I will definitely use Rooted in Writing’s services in the future!

Shani Mixon

DIPSUCHOS, copy edit (pub. 2020)

Amazing job by the RIW team! From the initial call with Amber to the final proofread with Kristen, I was impressed every step of the way through this project. I appreciated how my copyeditor, Christi, was careful to maintain the author’s voice with her edits. I look forward to working with RIW again in the future.

Camden Mays

COLE CAMERON SERIES, copy edit (pub. 2019)

Although a manuscript evaluation is all I requested, I received so much more. I used the evaluation to shape my final novel that I am proud to say is in the process of being published. Amber pointed out the major flaws in my manuscript while at the same time giving words of encouragement. As any first-time author well knows, encouraging words are invaluable. I will recommend Amber Helt and Rooted in Writing to anyone seeking editorial services. Thanks for reading, and like Amber says . . . Happy Writing!

FERN MAJESTIC AND THE FALL OF A DRAGON, manuscript assessment (pub. 2018)

Working with Amber was just what I needed. She was a fresh set of eyes and a cheerleader for my novel. Now that I have my evaluation report, I’m excited to get back to work making adjustments and making my novel its very best!

Linnea Welch

MISTWALKER, manuscript assessment, the Florist package, book layout (pub. 2020)

Amber Helt, she knows her stuff. My editor referred her to me. I learned a lot from her. Whenever I had a question about formatting, she would send me reference points on how and why she formatted a certain way. Extremely knowledgeable in her craft. She is not about wasting time. She is about her business and wants her clients to produce the best they can. I have already recommended her to a friend and will definitely use her services in the future.

Tamu Blue Miller

LETTERS TO THE FIRST LADY, proofread and layout (pub. 2020)

Not only was the Rooted in Writing team professional, but everyone who worked on my manuscript really took everything into consideration. From my voice to my story and all of the little details in between. It would take a lot for me to go with a different agency to edit my work. I cannot wait to work with them again on my next book!

S. E. Mattison

MIRROR OF THE GODS, the Florist package (pub. 2022)

Rooted in Writing has copyedited two of my short stories and a novella. The latter wouldn’t have seen the light of day if it wasn’t for her coaching and encouragement. RIW’s sharp mind paired with her solid grasp of the mechanics of writing took my stories to the next level. Her thorough explanations helped me grow as a writer, and I fully intend to work with her on future projects.

Skylar Moore

NOT MINE TO LOVE, copy edit (pub. 2019)

I just want to give thanks to Amber for her assessment on my manuscript. Showing your work to an editor for the first time was a huge daunting step for me, but from start to finish Amber made me feel comfortable and cared for. I felt my work mattered and was important to her. The process was smooth! Amber showed her expertise in the craft of writing throughout the whole process, resulting in a writer-and-editor relationship that has been very beneficial to my book.

Alexzandre R. Thompson

YURKEN ENFORCER SQUAD, manuscript assessment

I truly do not feel like I would have finished my novel without the help of Amber Helt. She took what I had compiled for twenty-three years, put her sparkle over it, and made it a beautifully finished product. I was new to this process and she was there every step of the way, always happy to answer questions and to help with ideas. She went over my book with a fine tooth comb, making sure all of the details were accounted for and correct. Amber definitely went above and beyond in helping and completing my book. I felt that she truly cared about my project and poured her heart and soul into it, just as I did. She pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me really think about the outcome of my book. She is not only a gifted writer, she’s also amazingly organized and can see the “big picture.” She has a plethora of talents, including a brilliant mind and a creative flair. I would recommend anyone and everyone who needs help with writing or editing to run to Amber at Rooted in Writing. I cannot say enough about this gal and her company. I am so thankful that I found the amazing Amber Helt! My book is truly a reflection of her talents, integrity, knowledge, and work ethic. I am blessed!

HARVESTING HOLLYWOOD, the Greenhouse package (pub. 2018)

Sending your writing to an editor is always nerve-racking, but Rooted in Writing made it painless. Her suggestions were thoughtful without being harsh, she picked up consistency errors no one else noticed, and she guided me in the right direction for future manuscripts. It was wonderful to work with someone who could fix the issues, yet leave my voice intact. I’ll definitely use her for copy editing projects in the future!

Anne Wheeler

SHADOWS OF WAR SERIES, the Florist package (pub. 2017)

The hard part was finishing my manuscript. The easy part was turning it over to Amber Helt at Rooted in Writing to get me to the finish line. She provided valuable input on the cover, came up with an amazing book layout, gave me lots of professional advice, and provided the final proofreading. Once the book was ready to publish, she set up my author page and portal on Amazon and uploaded my novel. I couldn’t have made it through the final steps without her. I am so grateful for the professional services I received from Rooted in Writing. I can highly recommend Amber and her team, and I will definitely use them for my next book!

JUST JACKIE, book layout and proofread (pub. 2022)

Amber’s approach was practical and non-abrasive. The revising/editing process is what I despise the most about writing, but she was able to edit in a way that I still have the creative passion while going through edits. She helped me take this from an idea and random notes to a legitimate book.  I highly recommend her services!  Thanks again! I will reach out to you on my next book.

LOVERS AND LATTES, developmental edit and copy edit (pub. 2016)

Most freelance editors offer sample edits. The sample edits I received from three previous editors failed to impress me. Then I sent my manuscript to Rooted In Writing. Amber’s sample edit gave me warm fuzzy, tingly feelings. I finally knew where to get the most bang for my editorial buck. Amber, unlike the three previous professional editors, actually got the big picture.

Let me give an example. My narrative mentions a “dark complected man.” All three prior editors corrected that to “dark complexioned.” The dictionary will confirm that complexioned is the preferred usage, however, as a third generation Texan, I have never heard any of my family or Texas native friends use the word complexioned. The dictionary will also confirm that complected is a grammatically correct usage typical of the southern US. Since the book is set in Dallas, the narrative should reflect grammar and word usage typical for the region. Amber left this word choice untouched, explaining that the narrative, setting, and dialogue should all match. Using the kings English when such usage would not naturally be heard in that setting, hurts the story. Amber studies what is correct in your setting—for your story—with your characters. My book is far better for her incite.

I could go on about professionalism, ideas for sub-plots, character development, going over and above what is expected—No need. You will find that out for yourself the first time you interact with Amber and her team.

LUNCH WITH THE MAFIA, line and copy edit (pub. 2018)

As a first time writer, Amber has been a great help to me. Not only did she deliver a thorough edit, Amber also helped me understand it. She’s walked me through not only the editing phase but also helped me understand other aspects of the writing and publishing process. I couldn’t be happier with the service I’ve received from Rooted in Writing.

Lawrence N. Oliver

THE LAST MARINES, developmental edit (pub. 2019)

It has been a great pleasure working with Amber. Thank you for editing my book! I really enjoyed her editing style. She not only corrected many words and sentences to make the chapters smoother and more comfortable to read, but also kindly added comments and notations explaining why the changes were necessary. These have helped me a lot as an author in understanding the many subtle choices in expression. Also, I am appreciative that she delivered her work on time. I’m looking forward to collaborating with her on my next book and happy to introduce her to my friends, should they have the need.

HOW TO INSPIRE OUTSTANDING IDEAS, copy edit (pub. 2017)

Amber Helt was truly a godsend. I presented for her review a manuscript that was over 52,000 words and she jumped right in, waist deep and worked out all of my many kinks and errors. Amber displayed strong sagacity coupled with a very keen and gifted ability to recognize the many pitfalls that could lead to catastrophic failure for a published author. She possesses a strong command over the English language, and her intellectual editing prowess is unrivaled in the editorial community. One of the many things I admire most about Amber is her ability to communicate timely and efficiently. She is an example by which others in her professional milieu could truly be judged. Thank you SO much, Amber!

Robert M. Patterson

CHURCH SECURITY 360, developmental edit, line edit (pub. 2017)

Amber has done a phenomenal job in editing my novel. She’s done more than just spell-check or grammar-check the words—she’s taken the time to read and understand my book. Every suggestion she’s given has made the book much more readable and valuable. She’s helped me get the story across in a concise manner while also helping all the points I really wanted to make become much more clearer and consumable. I look forward to getting her edits back to see what a great book this is becoming. I think I’ll even buy one when we get done! I was very lucky to find Amber. She gives me the confidence to keep writing. I think that lots of people have stories to tell, and really need to tell them, but many of us are not English majors or experts at bringing a story to publishing levels of excellence. Amber Helt has those qualities.
