At the Root
a critique group for editors who tell stories of their own
Reigniting Your Love of Writing
Some editors will tell you they’ve never had the desire to write for themselves. Others, however, entered this profession because of their own love for prose. But how many of us creatives have lost our own passion and purpose for writing because of our love for serving others? Protecting your creativity is an important part of any artist’s life. Part of what makes us storytellers is our desire to give to others, to share part of ourselves with those around us. The risk we run is losing ourselves in the process. Have you given all your best metaphors to your clients? Is your creative cup empty?
At the Root, a division of Rooted in Writing®, is a writers’ workshop designed to support editors in the fight to carve out creative space in their own lives. As a member, you’ll be encouraged to set your own goals for writing success and be supported on your creative journey through critique and close-knit community.
A group for professional creatives reclaiming their own art
You win some, you lose some. Life and work get busy, and we get that. Deadlines come up, projects get derailed, kids fall sick. Wrote two thousand words and want feedback? Let’s read it. Didn’t find time to get any writing done? Let’s talk about it, help you foster space, and support your growth by celebrating the little creative moments.
If you were unable to engage with your art and write something for critique one week, we encourage you to come to the meeting anyway! This group is about reclaiming space for your creativity, so setting aside ninety minutes in a busy week to give critique on others’ writing, discuss your own goals and thoughts, and receive encouragement from colleagues is a great way to continue building that habit so your wordsmithing is part of your weekly routine. If we have two or more members that week who don’t have any writing to share for critique, we’ll use the meeting time for discussion or an impromptu writing sprint.
The Process
Meetings are on the second and fourth Thursday each month, 7-8:30 p.m. central time.
Each member gets 15 minutes to read/share, followed by 5 minutes of feedback.
All genres welcome. All stages of drafting welcome.
Didn't write something this week? Come lend your critiques & receive encouragement.
Months with 5 Thursdays will use the last week for an online writing sprint.
